Cicada

Directed and written by its two main actors, and based on real events, this debut film is a tender and loving reminder of the healing power of love and the enduring strength of human connection.

After a spate of failed heterosexual endeavors, Ben, a bisexual man turns back towards the gay community. As Ben emerges from the closet, a relationship between him and Sam, two young men living in New York City, energetically blossoms. As their partnership develops, Sam, struggling with his own challenges as a man of color, helps Ben confront a dark secret from his past.

Cicada remains completely romantic, but substantively takes on darker themes that further the discourses around coming out, supportive same sex relationships, self-acceptance, and the lasting echos of trauma. Beautifully acted and full of unfettered emotion and raw sexuality, this film is a beacon of solace.
